HOME / FASTING / 16:8 VS 20:4
Four hours of fasting separate them, and they cross a stage boundary. 16:8 stops inside Fat Mobilisation; 20:4 spends two hours in Ketosis Entry.
One stage deeper, and half the window. Here is whether that trade is worth making.
16:8
TWO HOURS INTO FAT MOBILISATION
Breakfast dropped, then two meals from lunch onward. Eight hours absorbs a dinner that moves and leaves room to put a training session somewhere sensible.
20:4
TWO HOURS INTO KETOSIS ENTRY
One main meal and something either side of it. The fast crosses into Ketosis Entry two hours before the window opens, which is the stage 16:8 never reaches.
This is a real stage difference rather than four more hours of the same thing. Ketosis Entry is where ketone production becomes meaningful and the brain starts supplementing glucose with ketones. Neither reaches Fat Burning, which does not open until 24 hours.
The trade
Eight hours to four halves your window. What you get for it is the one stage 16:8 leaves on the table.
WHAT YOU GAIN
Ketone production becomes meaningful in this stage, and hunger often drops rather than climbing. That second part surprises people who assume longer always means harder.
WHAT IT COSTS
You can fit a main meal and something either side of it, but not two full ones. Getting enough protein in takes more thought than it does on eight hours.
THE SAME EITHER WAY
Hunger arrives in waves that peak and pass, and hour 14 is where one usually lands on either schedule. On a 20:4 you have six hours to go when it arrives rather than two.
Choosing
Eight hours covers lunch and dinner, so a family meal or a work lunch fits without planning around it. Four hours usually means picking one.
If reaching Ketosis Entry is the reason you are fasting, this is the shortest daily schedule that gets properly into it. An 18:6 only reaches its opening.
Going from eight hours to four in one move is a large jump. Six hours reaches the boundary and still holds two meals, and switching plans keeps your history intact.
Time-restricted eating produces weight loss in controlled human trials, comparable to other approaches at matched intake. No trial establishes that a four hour window outperforms an eight hour one. Which pattern a person can sustain matters more than which is theoretically optimal. Claims here are drawn from peer-reviewed research and traced in our evidence policy.
Burn names Ketosis Entry at 18 hours because a timer has to draw a line. Nothing switches on at a stated hour, and onset varies with your last meal, your activity, your sleep and your metabolism. Speak to your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of eating disorders, manage diabetes, take medication timed to meals, or are under 18.
Burn names every stage as you reach it, with a buzz on your wrist at each boundary.
