Burn Burn Get Burn

HOME / FASTING

Every way to fast, and which one to start with.

A fasting schedule is just two numbers: hours you don't eat, hours you do. Or no numbers at all, if you'd rather run open-ended and stop when it feels right. Every way Burn runs a fast, what each one asks of you, and where to begin.

Burn's timer at 20 hours 9 minutes on a 20:4 fast, stage Ketosis Entry

20:4

Start where you can finish

A 16:8 you keep beats a 20:4 you abandon on day three. Burn lets you move up when the shorter fast stops feeling hard.

Change plans whenever

Your plan is a setting, not a commitment. Burn shows your current plan at the top of the list, and you can pick a different one whenever the week calls for it.

Or don't set an end at all

Start open-ended and the timer just counts, naming stages as you pass them. No target, nothing to fail. Three custom protocols too, if you'd rather define your own window.

Daily schedules

The three almost everyone starts with.

Same timer, three different windows. The longer you go, the further into the stages you get, and the more the plan asks of your evenings.

16:8 Best first plan

Dinner at eight, lunch at noon. You sleep through most of it, and you reach Fat Mobilisation by morning.

Deepest stage reached: Fat Mobilisation

Read the 16:8 guide → Burn's timer at 14 hours 36 minutes on a 16:8 schedule
18:6 Next step up

Two hours further than 16:8, which is where ketone production starts to mean something.

Deepest stage reached: Ketosis Entry

Read the 18:6 guide → Burn's timer at 18 hours 47 minutes on an 18:6 schedule, stage Ketosis Entry
20:4 For the experienced

One four-hour window. Harder socially than physically once you're used to it.

Deepest stage reached: Ketosis Entry

ScheduleHow it runsDeepest stage
12:12 An even split. Finish dinner, eat breakfast twelve hours later. The gentlest way in. Glycogen Depletion Guide →
14:10 A halfway house to 16:8. Useful if skipping breakfast entirely is a step too far. Fat Mobilisation Guide →
OMAD One meal a day. Simple to run, easy to under-eat on, so worth doing with a plan. Ketosis Entry Guide →
5:2 Eat normally five days, restrict two. A weekly pattern rather than a daily one. Ketosis Entry Guide →
Alt-day A fasting day, then an eating day, repeating. Graded Experienced, like 4:3. Fat Burning Guide →

Same body, same path

However you fast, your body takes the same route.

Your schedule decides how far along this ladder you get, and an open-ended fast simply keeps going up it. Either way the ladder itself doesn't change. Burn names the stage you're in, tells you what's happening, and says how firm the evidence behind it is.

Fasting without food

Longer fasts, and what they ask of you

Past a daily window the question changes from when you eat to what you take while you don't. Two practices, each with its own section.

WATER, SALT, COFFEE, TEA
