The 48 hour fast

Two full days without food. It spends 24 hours inside Fat Burning and finishes exactly where Deep Ketosis begins.

A fast this length is a planned event, not a routine. Here is what the two days involve, and what to have ready before you start.

Half of a 48 hour fast is spent in one stage. Fat Burning runs from hour 24 to hour 48, and the fast ends at the moment Deep Ketosis begins.

The stage you spend it in

Fat Burning, in Burn's words

What's happening

Your primary fuel source is now body fat. Ketone levels are elevated. Growth hormone has increased significantly, helping preserve lean muscle. Cellular stress response pathways are activating.

You may feel

Sustained energy, clearer thinking, reduced appetite. You may notice your breath changes slightly.

The growth hormone line is the answer to the muscle question people ask about fasts this long. The breath change is a common effect of elevated ketones.

The two days

What each day asks of you

The second day is usually easier than the first, which surprises people who expect the difficulty to build.

HOURS 0 TO 24

Day one is the work

You pass through every stage a daily fast reaches, including the hunger waves around your usual meal times. Keep the day busy and the evening quiet.

HOURS 24 TO 48

Day two settles

Appetite is reduced in this stage and thinking often feels clearer. The limiting factor shifts from hunger to hydration and to how you have slept.

AFTER

Coming off it matters

Break it with something small, then a light meal an hour or two later. A large first meal after two days is the most common mistake.

Electrolytes stop being optional at this length. Burn shows a reminder to keep sodium, potassium and magnesium up while a long fast is running, and logs all three in the Journal.

Plan the two days, and the meal after

Pick a weekend, not a work deadline

Two days without food is easier when you control your schedule. Avoid hard training, long drives, and anything that needs you at your sharpest.

Build up to it

A 48 hour fast is not a first attempt. Complete a 24 hour fast comfortably before you extend to two days, and you will know what to expect from the first half.

Decide the first meal in advance

Choosing it while hungry after two days rarely goes well. Have something small and gentle ready before you begin.

SAFETY AT THIS LENGTH

A 48 hour fast deserves a conversation first

Speak to a doctor before a fast of this length, and particularly if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of eating disorders, manage diabetes, take medication timed to meals, or are under 18.

Stop and eat if you feel unwell, whatever the timer says. Dizziness that does not settle, heart palpitations, shaking, or feeling confused are different from ordinary hunger and mean ending the fast.

Longer is not automatically better

A 48 hour fast is not a stronger version of a 16:8 for everyone. What you eat across the week, how you sleep, and whether you can repeat the pattern still decide most of the outcome. Extended fasting raises the importance of hydration and of how you break the fast.

What the boundary means

Burn names Deep Ketosis at 48 hours because a timer has to draw a line. Onset varies with your last meal, your activity, your sleep and your metabolism. Burn maps elapsed time to named stages and does not measure ketosis, autophagy, or metabolic state. Claims here are drawn from peer-reviewed research and traced in our evidence policy.
