HOME / GUIDES / BEGINNERS
Start shorter than you think, keep the first week boring, and let the habit do the work. Everything below is what a first month of fasting actually asks of you.
Burn ships nine schedules starting at 11:13, so the beginning is a real setting rather than a compromise.
Where to start
A twelve hour fast is a far better first week: finish dinner, sleep, eat breakfast a little later than usual. That is the whole protocol.
Move up when the current length stops taking effort, not on a schedule. Every step below is a plan you can select in Burn.
The beginner ladder
Burn's programs are tagged Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced, and they schedule the fasts for you day by day.
BEGINNER
One week, built to get a first fast finished.
BEGINNER
Two weeks with the lengths already decided.
Week one
Nothing dangerous is happening. Your body is used to being fed on schedule and is sending signals to remind you. Those signals fade within days.
DAYS 1-2
You may feel irritable, distracted, or get a mild headache. Drink plenty of water, have black coffee or tea, and keep busy.
DAYS 3-4
The intense cravings of the first two days fade. This is the point where the fast stops occupying your attention.
DAYS 5-7
Once the week is behind you, the schedule is doing the work. Burn's streak and stage history are there to keep it going.
Burn includes The first week: what to expect in its in-app library, one of fifteen articles available free.
Four rules
Not the schedule. These four.
Anything with calories ends the fast in practice. Milk in coffee is the one that catches people out most often.
What breaks a fast →Two ordinary meals, not a reward. Eating your way back through the deficit is what leaves a month of fasting showing nothing.
Nutrition Window guidance →Five finished 14 hour fasts do more than one heroic 24. Burn counts streaks, records and completions for exactly this reason.
Streaks and records →Hunger comes in waves that peak and pass. Knowing which hour the wave lands in is most of the battle.
What happens at 14 hours →
When it gets hard
Burn opens a support sheet mid-fast instead of leaving you with a countdown. The 20-minute rule starts a hunger timer and keeps ending the fast available while it runs. Drink water first logs a glass and starts a ten minute timer.
Motivation, distraction, a symptom check and a reminder of why you started make up the rest. All six are free.
See all six tools →Speak to a doctor before starting if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of eating disorders, take medication timed to meals, manage diabetes, or are under 18. Stop and eat if you feel unwell, whatever the timer says.
Burn maps elapsed time to named stages, drawing on peer-reviewed research for the description of each one. It does not measure ketosis, autophagy, or metabolic state, and it is not medical advice.
Pick a plan, name the fast, and let Burn handle the clock, the stages and the week that follows.
